Whether you live in LA, where it is perennially spring, or in New York, where winter seems never-ending, the official onset of the new season offers the perfect excuse to refresh your handbags. But don't burn up your credit cards just yet; I suggest you shop your own closet first (or your girlfriend's, which I'll get to later). Springtime marks the ideal time to assess everything you own, figure out what should be tossed, kept or stored, and then peruse your favorite boutiques to consider new investments. Let the spring bag "cleaning" begin!

While many of my bags are year-round pieces, there are certain materials and shades that should be reserved for cold weather. Bags to store away during warmer months? Pony-hair and suede in darker colors and anything blatantly furry or shearling is a no-no come spring.

What to Carry for Spring:

1) Leather bags, light in both weight and color

2) Patent leather, especially in white, baby blue, petal pink and other pastels

*Patent-leather pro tip: Use Windex to spot clean if necessary (I use Method all natural clear glass cleaner). Leather-smiths can't do too much for patent leather, so if it gets stained, you're pretty much out of luck.

3) Canvas looks fresh, easy and appropriately casual this time of year.

4) Prints, especially florals and polka dots are always major this time of year. Camouflage is a year-round neutral as is leopard (as long as it's not fur).

5) Python, ostrich, lizard, crocodile and other amphibians are considered evergreen bags.

If you have the room and/or budget, buy plastic containers to store your bags when they are out of season, which will keep them from getting crushed. (Target has similar options to the The Container Store at a fraction of the price.) To help bags keep their shape and save room in your closet for new clothes, roll sweaters and scarves inside tissue paper and pack them in the winter bags you're storing away. But before you put away your sweaters and scarves, clean them with Dryel, an at home dry clean system I am obsessed with.

I know the general consensus is to toss anything you haven't worn for six months to a year, but I say err on the side of caution. I like to give myself two full years to decide if I'm ready to part with something. And sometimes by then, it's in fashion again! But there are a few things to which that rule doesn't apply: Get rid of anything that is painful, causes calluses, constricts breathing and/or makes you look like you belong in a bridge club in Palm Beach.

And remember, one girl's junk is another girl's treasure. (Just look at ex-boyfriends!) My BFFs and I like to swap bags each season. Invite your friends over, tell them to bring anything they don't want and sip cocktails while you make trades.
